5 Things to Consider Before Painting Your Room

Painting your room can do wonders with your mood, disposition, and productivity. We might fail to notice it but our wall colours can contribute to our moods. For instance, when you are in a newly-painted workplace, you are suddenly motivated to work. On the other hand, when you are stuck in a dull coloured room, you constantly feel exhausted. Repainting your room might just be the way to a more positive and cheerful you.

5 Things to Consider Before Painting Your Room

But before you dip that paintbrush into your can of paint, you might want to read these tips first. Here, we listed some things that must be considered before painting a room. Following these tips will save you money, energy, and supplies.

#1 Prepare the supplies you need

The key to a perfect painting project is to prepare everything. Here’s what you need to prepare before embarking on your painting project:

Paint Brush & Rollers

You will need a high quality paintbrush and a paint roller when painting a room and both of these painting supplies come in various sizes. Thus, you have to identify the right size for your room.

Small paint brushes are used for areas with narrow dimensions, small furniture, and for adding details. On the other hand, large brushes are used for easier and faster coating of broad surfaces. The same goes for paint rollers.

Paint

As for the paint, you might want to avoid running out of it once you’re in the middle of painting your room. For first time painters, you can use online paint calculators to get a rough estimation. You might also decide on the colour of your paint before buying your supplies.

Drop sheets for covers

Although moving your things out of the room before painting is more effective, there are things you cannot move out. Thus, you will need to have some drop sheets ready to protect your things from paint splashes. These can be old bed sheets that can do the job.

#2 Testing the colour.

If you are not sure whether the colour scheme you want will look good on your walls or not, then it is important for you to do a test.  Do this by buying a sample pot for you to see how the paint will look during daytime, night time, and when the lights are on or off. This will give you an assurance if you should go with the colour or change your preference.

#3 Choose the right finish.

Unfamiliar with paints? Paints do not only come in various colours. They also have various finishes. Each finish has its use and effect. For instance, a glossy finish can be good for doors and drawers. The glossy finish is easier to clean as it doesn’t absorb water and oil, nor do dust particles attached to it. Thus, you can easily get rid of dirt from your door by wiping it with soap and water. However, a glossy finish won’t hide wall imperfection very well. Therefore, it is not advisable for uneven surfaces.

For such instances, using a flat finish is more applicable. The only downside of a flat finish is that it is more prone to dirt and damages. Therefore, applying the right finish to the right surface must be taken into consideration when painting your room.

#4 Prepare the room.

As mentioned earlier, removing things from your room before repainting is advisable. Move out the things that you do not want to get ruined by paint splashes. Cover the immovable things with drop sheets. You might also want to cover your floor with drop sheets for the paint drippings.

#5 Use a primer.

Primer is a painting supply that is applied as a base before the actual paint colour. Primers can conceal small impurities on your wall which will be visible when repainted. Furthermore, primers can help with paint absorption which will make your painting task easier.

Conclusion

These are just some of the things you must consider when painting your room. Although painting is among the cheapest renovations you can make, it can be taxing to some. Should you need help in repainting different areas of your house? Send us a message.
